CHAPTER TWELVE
IAN CAME TO CHECK ON me in the morning, to make sure that my energy levels were restored. âAre you sure that you're feeling okay?â he asked, eyebrows raised.
âIan, Iâm fine!â I sat up in bed, ready to slap him. âEight hours under that thing?â I gestured to the box above my bed. âTrust me, Iâm good as new.â
âWell, I can see that is a battle I stand no chance in winning.â I crossed my arms behind my head and lay back on the bed. âStubborn, and yet adorable.â
âThatâs me,â I responded, grinning.
He took a seat beside me on the bed, brushing my hair out of my face. âIâm just glad youâre okay.â I closed my eyes, trying to avoid his piercing eyes. âI should probably get back. Ramonaâs probably noticed I left by now.â
âYeah.â I took his hand between both of mine. âWouldnât want to piss her off.â I smiled as Ian bent down to kiss me goodbye. âHey... Ian?â
âYeah?â
âDo you think you could send Official Agnes in here?â I asked. âIâd like to speak with her.â Ian was already half way out of the door when he turned around to nod in response. âThank you.â He smirked, closing the bedroom door behind him as he left.
I had so many questions for her, and I knew that
I was running out of time. I needed to know why Lucas killed those fifteen residents, and how. I needed to know, even though I was sure she wouldnât tell me. There had to be a reason, she always managed to leave that tiny detail out. Lucas would have had a plan already in place. He would have decided who he would kill and how. There had to be an explanation as to why the Command Center didnât act quicker. I needed to know the truth before I took off to face him tomorrow. It was a matter of life and death now, no more games.
There was a light tap on the door a few moments later. âYou asked for me?â Official Agnes peeked through the doorway. I sat up in bed, trying to keep my cool. âAutumn. I hope that isnât why you called me here. You know that I canât tell you that.â
âYou canât or you donât want to?â I countered.
âA bit of both, I suppose.â She made her way into the room, closing the door gently behind her.
âLook, the least you can do is tell me why he did it,â I replied bitterly.
The Official took a seat beside me on the bed, reaching over to grab my hand. âLucas is a monster, Autumn. Trust me, you donât want to know what he was thinking.â
âTry me.â I teased. As much as Official Agnes didnât feel comfortable bringing it up, I needed to know everything. And a part of her understood that. âIâm not a child, you know. If Iâm going to face him tomorrow, I need to know what is capable of. No matter how disturbing it may be.â
âAlways so stubborn, child.
