CHAPTER TWELVE

IAN CAME TO CHECK ON me in the morning, to make sure that my energy levels were restored. “Are you sure that you're feeling okay?” he asked, eyebrows raised.

“Ian, I’m fine!” I sat up in bed, ready to slap him. “Eight hours under that thing?” I gestured to the box above my bed. “Trust me, I’m good as new.”

“Well, I can see that is a battle I stand no chance in winning.” I crossed my arms behind my head and lay back on the bed. “Stubborn, and yet adorable.”

“That’s me,” I responded, grinning.

He took a seat beside me on the bed, brushing my hair out of my face. “I’m just glad you’re okay.” I closed my eyes, trying to avoid his piercing eyes. “I should probably get back. Ramona’s probably noticed I left by now.”

“Yeah.” I took his hand between both of mine. “Wouldn’t want to piss her off.” I smiled as Ian bent down to kiss me goodbye. “Hey... Ian?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you think you could send Official Agnes in here?” I asked. “I’d like to speak with her.” Ian was already half way out of the door when he turned around to nod in response. “Thank you.” He smirked, closing the bedroom door behind him as he left.

I had so many questions for her, and I knew that

I was running out of time. I needed to know why Lucas killed those fifteen residents, and how. I needed to know, even though I was sure she wouldn’t tell me. There had to be a reason, she always managed to leave that tiny detail out. Lucas would have had a plan already in place. He would have decided who he would kill and how. There had to be an explanation as to why the Command Center didn’t act quicker. I needed to know the truth before I took off to face him tomorrow. It was a matter of life and death now, no more games.

There was a light tap on the door a few moments later. “You asked for me?” Official Agnes peeked through the doorway. I sat up in bed, trying to keep my cool. “Autumn. I hope that isn’t why you called me here. You know that I can’t tell you that.”

“You can’t or you don’t want to?” I countered.

“A bit of both, I suppose.” She made her way into the room, closing the door gently behind her.

“Look, the least you can do is tell me why he did it,” I replied bitterly.

The Official took a seat beside me on the bed, reaching over to grab my hand. “Lucas is a monster, Autumn. Trust me, you don’t want to know what he was thinking.”

“Try me.” I teased. As much as Official Agnes didn’t feel comfortable bringing it up, I needed to know everything. And a part of her understood that. “I’m not a child, you know. If I’m going to face him tomorrow, I need to know what is capable of. No matter how disturbing it may be.”

“Always so stubborn, child.
